Republic Of Ireland defender Cyrus Christie has spoken out about the online racist abuse he received off the back of last week's World Cup play-off defeat to Denmark.

The abuse was brought to light after revelations by team-mate James McClean, and it emerged the comments had brought Christie to tears.

In a statement to Twitter, the Middlesborough defender said the incident last week was NOT isolated:

His statement has led to a number of Irish players past and present to publicly support Christie, including Paul McGrath.

The FAI also issued their support:

One of our own. 🇮🇪💚 #COYBIG

Christie has called on the Irish fans to help combat racism, adding that the people who have racially abused him 'are not representative of our fans or our sport'.
