Theft-related crime has increased by 39% in the year to September, compared to the same period in 2021.

That's according to new CSO figures on recorded crime in Ireland.

The figures show there were increases in 11 out of the 13 crime categories in the third quarter of this year.

Burglaries were up 18% , assault-related crimes increased by a fifth.

With theft seeing the biggest rise, criminologist Trina O'Connor isn't surprised:

"We often see an increase in theft related crime when there's an increase in poverty, for example."

Trina says it's "directly related" to the Cost of Living Crisis.
