Covid 19: Health Officials Report 18 Additional Deaths & 358 Cases

358 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed.

166 are in Dublin, 39 in Donegal, 16 in Kildare, 13 in Offaly, 12 in Meath and 12 in Limerick.

The remaining 100 cases are spread across 18 other counties.

There's been 18 additional deaths, 7 occurred this month.

There are 205 Covid patients in hospital, of which 48 are in ICU.

HSE Confirms Many AZ Clinics Cancelled This Week

The HSE has confirmed the majority of AstraZeneca clinics have been cancelled for the rest of the week.

However, it says a small number will continue for certain people over the age of 60.

It follows NIAC's recommendation that the vaccine be used for people in their 60s only, due to rare blood clotting.

Meanwhile the roll-out of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine to Ireland has been delayed as the company examines reports of rare blood clots.

Use of the jab was suspended in the US as they examine 6 cases among the 6.8 million doses already given.

Professor of Immunology at Maynooth University is Paul Moynagh.

He says the number of clotting cases is low in comparison to doses administered:

"These are very rare events, and that needs to be noted."

Re-iterating his point, he says, "they're very rare," a second time.

"The EMA, who we've entrusted in terms of licensing all of these various vaccines."

"They've maintained still with Astra Zeneca that the benefits across all age groups outweigh the risks."
