Covid-19: 35 Additional Deaths And 613 New Cases

This evening, the Department of Health confirmed 35 additional deaths relating to Covid-19.

21 of today's reported deaths occurred this month, 12 happened in January while one occurred in November last year.

One death is currently under investigation.

As of midnight last night, there have been 613 confirmed new cases of the virus.

Of today's cases, 66%  are under 45 years of age.

The median age is 34 years old.

Most of today's cases were identified in Dublin, where there are 224 new cases.

Elsewhere, there are 39 new cases in Limerick, 37 in Meath, 34 in Westmeath and 33 in Offaly.

The remaining 246 cases are spread across all other counties.

Meanwhile, there have been 20 additional hospitalisations in the past twenty-four hours.

In total, there are 591 Covid-19 patients in hospitals - 138 of whom are in intensive care.

The 14 Day incident rate is 226.1 per 100,000 population.

Vaccines Having Positive Impact On Healthcare Workers

As of Monday, the 22nd of February 133,325 people in Ireland have received both doses of Covid-19 vaccine.

Meanwhile, 226,291 have been administered their first dose.

Dr Lucy Jessop, Director of the National Immunisation office says vaccine roll out is already effect case numbers among health care workers.

"In the last week in January, almost 1,400 healthcare workers contracted COVID-19; that number was less than 300 last week.

"This is wonderful news and clearly demonstrates the early impact the vaccination programme is having.”

However, Dr Jessop said even if you've been fully vaccinated you must still adhere to the public health guidelines.
