Less than half as many people are using buses and trains now than before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Central Statistics Office says there are 57 per cent fewer journeys than before the crisis.

However the amount of cars on the roads is returning to normal.

They are down 13% in rural areas compared to the same time last year, and 16% in Dublin.

Conor Faughnan, from the AA, says says people are returning to the roads as before:

"For the August bank holiday weekend, we were at - or very close to normal August levels when compared with 2019."

"Most of the main roads were only down about 10% or slightly less."

"So we were very nearly back to normal, in terms of car volumes, for the month of August."

Conor continued:

"The pattern is still a little different, there's less commuting by car."

"While the morning rush hour isn't as severe as it was."

"But overall through the day, looking at indicators like traffic counters, demand on breakdown services and other indicators we can see."

"Ireland is back on the roads, the traffic has returned!"
