CAO Applications: Which Courses Saw The Biggest Increases & Decreases

CAO Applications

Just under 73,000 people made CAO applications in February.

Today the Central Applications Office has revealed which courses saw the biggest increases and decreases in applicants.

Decreases

Journalism and Information courses saw a drop of 19%.

With 1,169 people applying to the fields this year compared to 1,994 last year.

4,372 people applied for a Languages course, a 5% decrease.

Arts courses also saw a 5% decrease, with 34,070 people applying.

Agriculture studies had a drop of 8% in applicants.

While Nursing and Midwifery applications are also down 8%.

Elsewhere the number of mature student applications is down 7%.

And applicants from the UK have also dropped.

This year saw 715 students from the UK apply  compared to 762 last year, a decline of 6%.

UCD

Increases

Lots of fields saw an increased number of applicants this year.

297 people applied for Transport Services courses, a 43% increase on 2019 figures.

Primary and Secondary Education courses saw a 2% rise each.

Mathematics saw a 5% incline, while 8% more people applied for Pharmacy.

Elsewhere the number of people applying via the Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) is up 4%.

Applications from Northern Ireland are also up from 1,269 to 1,317 - 4% increase.

Late Applications & Change Of Mind

These figures are subject to change in the coming weeks with the closing date for Late Applications the 1st May 2020.

While the Change Of Mind option opens on 5th May and runs until 1st July.
