It looks like the cabinet will officially approve to hold a referendum on the 8th Amendment.

They'll meet this evening, where it's likely they'll discuss the wording and timing of the vote.

It's believed they favour a 'repeal and replace' approach to the referendum, whereby the current article will be removed and replaced with a provision for the Oireachtas to legislate on the issue.

The reason why they're considering inserting the provision is to avoid any legal problems in the future.

Over the weekend, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar indicated that he would campaign for 'liberalisation' of the abortion laws.

He's set to make his position clearer after tonights meeting.
