20x20 Campaign Launched For Women In Sport

A new campaign is aiming to increase the number of women taking part in sport by 20% in the next two years.

The "20 x 20" initiative is also hoping to increase media coverage for women's sports by 20%, with the same target set for those attending live games.

The latest research by Nielsen found that less than one-fifth of all televised sport features either women only or mixed sport.

Sinead O'Carroll, News Editor with the Journal.ie, says coverage of women's sport has focused on extraordinary achievement, and that needs to change:

"We have to make it about the ordinary rather than the extraordinary it can't be just all about the Rena Buckleys, Jessica Harringtons and the Casey Stoneys.

"It has to be about me who loves playing cornerback for my club and making sure that I have the ability to get all the way through and not give up at some stage because I wasn't winning awards every second day."
