SPIN catches up with Ruth Negga

SPIN's Sarina Bellissimo caught up with Irish actress Ruth Negga for a chat about her new Netflix movie Passing.

The movie, which also stars Tessa Thompson, drops on the streamer November 10th.

Passing follows the unexpected reunion of two high school friends (Ruth and Tessa).

Their renewed acquaintance ignites a mutual obsession that threatens both of their carefully constructed realities.

Sarina told Ruth that the following line in the movie really resonated with her: "We're all passing for something, aren't we?"

The SPIN presenter wanted to know how it made the Irish actress feel.

"I think it's the honesty of that," she responded.

Ruth explained, "The interesting thing is, is Clare is passing for white."

"A journey that is historically quite common in America especially, for various reasons."

"And Clare is the one passing for white, but she's actually the most truthful of all our characters."

Ruth Negga

"She is the most willing to be herself entirely, and unafraid to do that."

"Whereas, Irene who's beautifully played by Tessa... in order to sort of live this life where she is the pillar of the community..."

"She has had to suppress certain things about herself and hide certain truths about herself."

"And Clare's a sort of catalyst for the tension that arises when she discovers that that's not an entirely healthy way to live."

"When you suppress something, it's urge is to bubble up and get stronger and that's her battle."

"It's sort of triggered by this luminous being who embraces all aspects of herself, both the ugly and the bad..."

In the same interview, Ruth chats about the many themes of the film.

She also discusses the importance of giving platforms to many voices, MacBeth on Broadway with Daniel Craig and much more.
