Elephant & Castle opens a second location in Rathmines tomorrow.

The original Irish restaurant has stood in Temple Bar since 1989 however, it was in New York where the brand was first born.

After years of disappointing lunch breaks the newly retired Dr. George Schwartz decided to open a spot that he would enjoy eating in.

He named the eatery after a London tube stop he spotted during a stint in the U.K. and located his new restaurant across the road from the hospital he once worked in on Greenwich Avenue.

The chain finally made it's way to Dublin when chef Liz Mee came to the city for a visit in 1988 and decided on Temple Bar as the perfect place.

Tomorrow marks another new chapter in the Elephant and Castle story with the opening of the second Irish restaurant on the corner of Rathmines Road and Castlewood Avenue.

The venue will seat 110 and the menu will remain the same.

And 2019 will bring more exciting news as Monkstown will be the next neighbourhood in Dublin to gain an Elephant and Castle.
