All eyes on the stars of the Academy Awards tonight

The 91st Academy Awards take place in California this evening.

There's plenty of Irish interest in this year's ceremony.

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, 'The Favourite' is an Irish co-production from Element Pictures.

Cinematographer Robbie Ryan earned a nomination for Best Cinematography for his role in the film.

While altogether, 'The Favourite' has ten Oscar nominations.

Cartoon Saloon and Louise Bagnall's Late Afternoon has made the shortlist for Animated Short.

Irish director Vincent Lambe's controversial film about James Bulger's killers, Detainment, is in the running for Best Live Action Short.

Meanwhile, the categories that generate the most interest every year are Best Actor and Actress.

One of Yalitza Aparicio, Glenn Close, Olivia Colman, Lady Gaga or Melissa McCarthy will take home the actress accolade.

While Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Willem Dafoe, Rami Malek and Viggo Mortensen will battle it out for the best actor.

The 91st Academy Awards get underway in Hollywood tomorrow morning from 1am Irish time.
