Jim Carrey weighs in on Will Smith Oscars drama
If he was in Chris Rock's shoes, Jim Carrey said he'd be suing Will Smith for $200 million.
Will stormed on stage at the Oscars on Sunday night, and slapped Chris across the face over a joke he made about his wife, Jada.
While promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on CBS Mornings with Gayle King, Jim was asked his opinion on what happened at the Oscars.
Seemingly referencing Will's Best Actor win after the incident, he said, "I was sickened by the standing ovation."
"I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like, oh, this is a really clear indication that we're not the cool club anymore."
Should Will have been escorted out of the venue?
Gayle said a lot of people had made the point that if anyone else had reacted the way Will had, they'd have been removed from the venue.
"He should have been," Jim said.
The Mask actor went on to share his belief that Chris isn't filing charges because, "he doesn't want the hassle."
"I'd have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video is going to be there forever."
"It's going to be ubiquitous. You know, that insult is gonna last a very long time," Jim pointed out.
He said for Will to simply yell from the audience or throw up a tweet after the ceremony would have been much more acceptable.
"You do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face 'cause they said words."
Jim shared his belief that Will's reaction, "came out of nowhere because [he] has something going on inside him that's frustrated."
"And I wish him the best, I really do. I don't have anything against Will Smith. He's done great things. But that was not a good moment."
Responses to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars have been divided — but Jenna Wortham (@jennydeluxe) says most people don’t have the full story of the incident.
