Chris Rock's mother speaks out

Nearly a month to the day Will Smith shocked the world at the Oscars, Chris Rock's mother is sharing her opinion on what went down.

Rose told WIS-TV: "When he slapped Chris, he slapped all of us."

On March 28th, during the 2022 Oscars, Will Smith stormed on stage and smacked Chris Rock across the face.

It's after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's buzzcut.

Chris has said very little about the incident since it happened, but his mother is ready to speak.

Rose was asked if she could have a conversation with Will, what would she say, and she responded:

"What in the world were you thinking? You did a slap, but so many things could've happened from that."

"Chris could've stepped back and fallen."

She continued, "You really could've been taken out in handcuffs. You didn't think."

"You reacted to your wife giving you the side-eye and you went up and made her day because she was bowled over laughing when it happened."

Like everyone else, Rose, who watched at home on TV, thought the whole thing was staged at first.

"He really slapped me"

It wasn't until Will, "started using obscenities," that she realised his reaction was very real.

"When he slapped Chris, he slapped all of us. He really slapped me."

"Because when you hurt my child, you hurt me," she explained.

Rose struggled with not being able to comfort her son in-person when it happened.

She explained, "I was not [at the Oscars] this time."

"I couldn't reach out to him at that point, there was nothing to do and that's a hard thing for a mother."

"No matter how old they are, they're still your babies," she added.

After the altercation, Will publicly apologised on social media, and resigned from the Academy.

He was also issued a 10 year ban from attending all Academy events.
