"We're human beings."

That's a segment of a beautifully worded response from 'Get Out' and 'Black Panther' star Daniel Kaluuya when he was asked a question on the red carpet at last night's Oscars.

A reporter from Sky noted that the film’s racial themes “tick a lot of boxes in some ways."

With an awkward wince, the 29 year old replied:

"We’re not boxes, though. Articulating the black experience isn’t a box. We’re articulating our truth. We’re human beings.”

Get Out is a horror film written and directed by Jordan Peele.

It follows the story of Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a black man who uncovers a disturbing secret when he meets the family of his white girlfriend.

When reviewing the film, The Guardian wrote, "The thing Get Out does so well – and the thing that will rankle with some viewers – is to show how, however unintentionally, these same people can make life so hard and uncomfortable for black people."

Director Jordan Peele said, "the real thing at hand here is slavery."
