A man in his 50s has been arrested after a man was shot in the Hazel Grove area of Tallaght this afternoon.

The victim who is in his 30s was walking his dog at the time of the incident.

He is in a critical condition in Tallaght hospital, while it's understood his dog died at the scene.

Senior journalist at the Irish Independent Robin Schiller says the man has been taken to Tallaght Hospital:

"What I understand is that one man has suffered serious gunshot wounds."

"Also a dog that was with the man suffered a gunshot wound."

"It happened at a farmland off the Blessington Road, it is quite a big area of land."

"Gardaí currently have the scene sealed off."

"They are carrying out inquiries."

"The investigation is at a very early stage but is ongoing at the moment."

"At this stage Gardaí believe they are critical injuries."

"The man suffered serious injuries to his head, we believe, from this gunshot wound."

"But at this stage it is still early days."

"He is currently in hospital being treated for those gunshot injuries."
