Women's Aid saw the highest number of contacts in its 50 year history last year.

Over 32,000 people reached out to the charity for support and guidance.

One in three women suffer physical, psychological or sexual abuse from an intimate partner, according to Women's Aid.

It says the 46,765 disclosures it received last year is just the tip of the iceberg.

The charity's annual report shows violence against women increased across the board, with physical abuse up by over a fifth, and sexual abuse increasing by 30 per cent.

"The impact that that has on somebody can wear them down. Their self-esteem, their self belief, but also it can isolate them, it can make them vulnerable to poverty. It can make it difficult to leave. "

The report also found a third of people contacting the service were being abused by an ex-partner.

Gardaí "Unhelpful" To Some

44% who contacted Gardaí for support, found the response 'unhelpful'.

Sinn Féin Leader Mary-Lou McDonald says it's unacceptable:

"We still don't have women's refuge in every county, we've a judicial system that doesn't work for victims and 44% of victims reporting that they found the Gardaí unhelpful ."

Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan has defended the force:

"But the majority were, and there is training that is ongoing at Templemore in respect of this issue. I'm sure it can be improved, but the Gardaí do an excellent job."

The contacts made to Women's Aid last year reflect a 12% increase on 2023.
