His coffin was pulled through the street by a horse and cart, and led by the Artane Marching Band.

The funeral mass took place this afternoon in St. Mary Of The Rosary Church in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary.

Johnny Depp, Imelda May, Bono and Nick Cave were just some of the familiar names that turned up to celebrate the life of their late friend.

The ceremony featured musical numbers from multiple stars, all dedicated their performances to Shane and singing covers of his most popular songs.

Former Sinn Féin leader, Gerry Adams, was one of the first to speak this afternoon, and he praised Shane and his work:

"Thankful for his poet's eye, for the words of love and betrayal, justice and injustice, rejection and redemption. Grateful that Shane lifted us out of ourselves and that eh never gave up. Delighted that he empowered us to dance, and to sing, and to make fun, and to shout, and to yell, and to laugh, and to cry, and to love and to be free."

A private cremation will now follow today's public funeral mass.
