Rent Main Financial Burden For Students

Rent is the main financial burden facing third-level students.

Average student accommodation is €469 a month, an increase from €415.

That's according to new research by the Higher Education Authority.

Almost two-thirds of students have a job while attending college, but still need to financially rely on family to bridge the gap.

The average income of students was just over €1,100, with average outgoings €1,340.

The pandemic left its mark on students.

Almost 60% said their mental health had been affected, with females impacted most.

In terms of general mental health & well-being, 40% of students said they were 'happy', with 15% 'extremely happy'.

3% of those surveyed said they were 'extremely unhappy'.

32% of female students reported experiencing sexual harassment, compared to 14% of males.

Female students also said they 'have at some point been treated as less smart or less capable than others because of who they are'.
