Dublin Airport is preparing for its busiest summer ever - with a 4% jump in traffic.

Despite that, passengers are being assured wait times at security remain below 20 minutes.

It comes as airport bosses urge the government to speed up the planning process, as they prepare to welcome 40 million passengers annually in the coming year.

Managing Director, Gary McLean says they’re expecting over 36 million this year:

"We're really excited for whats going to be a record breaking year ahead for us with passengers numbers."

"We've already seen some significant busy days with over, five days so far with over 120,000 passengers - and that's going to continue to become a more frequent occurrence as we go through the summer," he said.

Meanwhile the Chief Executive of the group, Kenny Jacobs, has expressed frustration with how slow the planning process has been, as Dublin Airport attempts to expand.

"Our biggest worry and our biggest ask is: planning needs to go faster."

"The planning regime needs to change."

He says specialist planners should be assigned to facilities like the airport or Dublin Port, and they should have deadlines for examining applications.

The CEO also called for Dublin Airport to be re-classified as strategic infrastructure.

Strategic infrastructure is defined by An Bord Pleanála as, "it can generally be described as development which is of strategic economic or social importance to Ireland, the region or local areas."

"Since 2007, planning applications for proposed strategic infrastructure development are not submitted to the local planning authority but instead they are submitted to An Bord Pleanála for a decision. There are no appeals on An Bord Pleanála’s decision," it concludes.
