The figures were compiled by property website Daft.ie.

Rent is rising at its highest rate since 2016, according to a new report on rental prices.

The Daft.ie figures show a nearly 12 per cent rise in rent for the first three months of the year.

There was a bigger increase in rental rates outside of Dublin than in the capital.

The numbers show an 11 per cent rise there, but increases of up to 25 per cent in areas such as Leitrim.

The rent price hikes are the biggest recorded in over five years according to the Daft.ie report.

Author Ronan Lyons says there are several reasons, but it's partly down to a lack of supply.

"Conditions are very poor at the moment for renters trying to find somewhere to live," he said.

"We can see that in the number of homes available to rent."

"It's at an all-time low and the series goes back over fifteen years."
