Leaving Certificate

Thousands of students across the country are calling for the Leaving Certificate to be cancelled.

A proposal and petition have also been put together which aims to replace the exams with an estimated grades system.

A similar approach is being taken by the regulator in the UK.

The proposal to cancel the Leaving Cert states:

  • The safety and welfare of all students and staff must be upheld.
  • The progression of students into employment, higher education, apprenticeship, etc.
    must be minimally impacted.
  • Students must receive a formal qualification that accurately reflects their academic
    performance.
  • The qualification must maintain its integrity and must be comparable across years
where the examination cycle takes place as normal.
  • Previously submitted Leaving Certificate examination material should be considered,
as should the decision to award 100% of marks in certain subjects.

Students are also being asked the question by Unicef.

Minister for Education Joe McHugh says:

"We are doing everything in our power to make sure those exams happen."

All schools, pre-schools and further and higher education settings will remain closed until the 19th of April.
