There has been an increase in almost 3,000 sign-ups in the last 24 hours.

Irish people have been praised for their outpouring of generosity in response to the Ukrainian crisis.

Over 9,000 Irish homes have signed up to welcome refugees into their homes.

Minister Roderic O'Gorman has hailed Irish people from all over the country who have signed up.

Those interested can do so through an online portal here, in conjunction with the Irish Red Cross.

Yesterday, the portal crashed for a brief period due to the volume of users on the website.

O'Gorman has described the Irish response to welcoming Ukrainian refugees as 'very generous'.

"It's a huge outpouring of generosity and in the days ahead, the team we've established will contact people who have registered pledges on the portal."

"(The pledges) have come from all over the country. Every county and indeed, counties in Northern Ireland are represented."

"The allocation will be determined primarily by my department (of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth)."
