Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath

Mortal Kombat has come a long way since the early days of its rise in the classic arcades.

When I flicked on MK11 Aftermath and the loading screen appeared; memories came flooding back of pouring my well-earned pocket money into arcade machines and waiting for that clink of the coin to drop, signaling the start of the ultimate 1v1 fighting experience.

This time I’ve swapped the joystick and five buttons for the more streamlined handheld PS4 wireless controller.

I haven’t played any Mortal Kombat games for quite some time, but I do remember always losing to my older brother on the early PlayStation.

MK11 Aftermath is an expansion pack to the initial MK11 which was released last year, which also became the highest selling game in the 28-year history of the franchise.

Ultimately it was crowned, 'Fighting Game of the Year,' at the D.I.C.E awards in 2019.

If you’re looking for intense visual effects which spare no attention to detail when it comes to the gory bits, MK11 Aftermath is bursting at the seams with it.

The Aftermath story mode

The Aftermath story mode picks up where MK11 left off - with an unusual, but fun time travel adventure with epic movie-like video sequences between battles.

A funky new addition is the character's use of surrounding objects and stages materials in their finishing moves.

Always a treat when you’re dominating your opponent.

The expansion delivers a host of new characters including the return of MK fighters Fujin and Sheeva, and wait for it, RoboCop, yes Robocop is now a playable character.

Although Robocop is an enjoyable fighter to battle with it, Cassie Cage is probably the most fun fighter to use in terms of fighting dialogue and movement as well as her finishing moves.

Finally, the Aftermath expansion pack also delivers new updated features in relation to stages and you see the return of Klassic Dead Pool and Soul Chamber arenas to the fray.

Also, the new Friendship Feature allows you to finish off your rival with a hint of kindness to avoid total humiliation.

If you’re familiar with MK, then you’ll enjoy this MK11 and the Aftermath expansion.

If you’re not, then no better time than the present to get stuck in.

I think it’s time to battle my brother, 1v1 once again.

Available on PS4, XBOX One, PC and Nintendo Switch.

A review by Peter Collins.
