Here's why we never got a sequel to Elf
James Caan, who played Buddy's biological father Walter in Elf, has revealed why we never got a sequel.
He claims there was tension between the director, Jon Favreau, and the star of the movie, Will Ferrell.
It turns out the cast were up for a sequel, but these two couldn't work together.
James spilled the beans during a chat on Cleveland's 92.3 The Fan's Bull & Fox, as per MailOnline.
He said, "We were gonna do it and I thought, 'Oh my god, I finally got a franchise movie, I could make some money.'"
"'Let my kids do what the hell they want to do.'"
"The director and Will didn't get along very well," James alleged.
"So, Will wanted to do it, he didn't want the director, and he had it in his contract, it was one of those things."
It's reported the contracts were created in such a way that both Jon and Will had to be involved for a sequel to be made.
Elf
The Christmas classic follows the story of a boy named Buddy who's accidentally brought up in the North Pole.
As he gets older, he starts to feel like he doesn't belong there.
So he takes off on a mission to find his biological father in New York.
The movie became a massive success, grossing over $220.4 million, with a budget of $33 million.
In a previous interview, as quoted by MailOnline, the director revealed where the movie stemmed from.
He said, 'They were looking for somebody to rewrite it and possibly direct and I remember reading it, and it clicked.'
Jon said he spent a year rewriting the script, inspired by festive stories he grew up hearing.
His explained his thought process; 'If I made the world that he was from as though he grew up as an elf in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, one of those Rankin/Bass Christmas specials I grew up with, then everything fell into place tonally.'
Jon and Will haven't commented.
