This weekend sees the release of one of the biggest (and we mean that literally) blockbusters of the year with Kong: Skull Island, and in order to give you a little bit of a head start, we thought we’d get you all caught up on everyone involved, because the cast list in this one is monstrous (geddit?), and that’s not even including the actual monsters…
TOM HIDDLESTON (James Conrad)
Where do I know him from? Annoying his big brother Thor and the rest of the Avengers as Loki, and running a hotel while spying on Hugh Laurie in The Night Manager.
And this time? He’s a world renowned tracker who has been hired by a shady government agency to help them find their way around the mysterious Skull Island.
SAMUEL L. JACKSON (Preston Packard)
Where do I know him from? Keeping the Avengers in check as Nick Fury, bringing down furious anger in Pulp Fiction, or keeping things cool as ice as Frozone in The Incredibles.
And this time? He’s in charge of the military side of the operation, but still smarting from having to retreat from Vietnam, this is one battle he isn’t going to give up easily.
BRIE LARSON (Mason Weaver)
Where do I know her from? Winning an Oscar from her role in Room, being one of Scott Pilgrim’s vengeful seven ex’s, or as Amy Schumer’s much calmer sister in Trainwreck.
And this time?An award winning war photographer just looking for something different and new, with next to no idea what she’s got herself in for.
JOHN C. REILLY (Hank Marlow)
Where do I know him from? Will Ferrell’s arch-nemesis but then best friend in Step-Brothers, Will Ferrell’s best friend but then arch-nemesis in Talladega Nights, or the video game character to save all video game characters in Wreck-It Ralph.
And this time? Having crashed on Skull Island back during World War II with no discernible way off, he’s gone a little crazy from the isolation, but he’s also the only one who knows the full scope of the danger.
JOHN GOODMAN (Bill Randa)
Where do I know him from? Locking up Mary Elizabeth Winstead in 10 Cloverfield Lane, the incredibly short-fused Walter in The Big Lebowksi, or the big cuddly Sully in Monsters Inc.
And this time? He’s in charge of the operation, being the only one who truly believes the scientific potential of Skull Island. His company Monarch is also heavily involved in proceedings in the Godzilla attack decades later.
KONG
Where do I know him from? He’s actually been in nine movies, the first one back in 1933, but you probably know him best from the 2005 version where he kind of fell in love with Naomi Watts, and was played by Andy Serkis.
And this time? He’s protecting his home of Skull Island from any and all intruders, and that includes a massive military helicopter presence. And he’s played by Toby Kebbell, who has some ape already in his CV, having played this evil monkey in Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.
SKULL CRAWLERS
Where do I know them from? I dunno… your worst nightmares?
And this time? They also live in Skull Island, but are only woken when the humans arrive and start doing disruptive tests. This is not good for the humans, or for Kong, or for any living thing within biting distance, to be honest.
