Twitter has revealed it's list of the biggest trending stories in Ireland for the last year.

This year saw Irish Twitter users react en masse as Hurricane #Ophelia swept through the country, engage in the ongoing political and constitutional debates on #Brexit and #RepealThe8th, and celebrate and speculate on global sporting occasions like #WRWC2017.

#COYBIG once again ranked high in commentary as Martin O'Neill's Republic of Ireland side got within one match of a trip to Russia.

Meanwhile, staying in the sporting sphere, Conor McGregor's tweet announcing the fight with Floyd Mayweather was the most liked and retweeted from an Irish handle last year.

Meanwhile, the absolutely bonkers video of a Kerry family trying to chase a bat out of a house also featured among the biggest tweets of the year:

In terms of music, it was actually Harry Styles who was the most mentioned star among Irish users, pipping local favourite Niall Horan to the top spot.

Ariana Grande also featured in the top 5 artists, however it was the bombing at her concert in Manchester which was one of the most talked about stories of 2017.

It was the 4th most tweeted about international story by Irish users, behind Donald Trump, Syria and the UK General Election.
