The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences earlier this year announced the introduction of a brand new category for the Oscars - Popular Film.
They had planned on introducing the category in the upcoming 91st Academy Awards on February 24th, 2019.
However, they have decided to postpone its introduction after facing backlash from critics questioning what it is that makes a film eligible for the award.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Academy have stated that although the new category won't be introduced in the upcoming awards ceremony, they will, ''examine and seek additional input regarding the new category.''
They admitted that, "there has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award,'' and that they, ''recognize the need for further discussion with [their] members."
