Reese Witherspoon opened up about leaving an abusive relationship in conversation with Mindy Kahling and Oprah in her Super Soul Sunday chat.

The Legally Blonde icon spoke of struggles with self esteem caused by the relationship and how strong she is now as a result of it.

"Leaving those situations [isn’t] easy because it’s wrought with self-doubt, particularly if someone damages your self-esteem. I didn’t have self-esteem, you know?"

"People say to me that knew me then, 'You’re a completely different person.'"

"It’s part of why I can stand up and say, 'Yes, I’m ambitious' because someone tried to take that from me before."

She credits her experiences of leaving an abusive relationship for changing her on a "cellular level", a change which undoubtedly resonates with victims of abuse the world over.

Talking about how Big Little Lies came about Reese shared powerful revelations about the abuse suffered by the women who came to be involved in the show.

"There wasn’t a woman there who hadn’t been affected by abuse. Not one of those women. And it’s why we decided to make this show."
