This Sunday is the first big awards ceremony of the year the Golden Globes.  On Friday's Spin Talk we had Sarina Bellissimo (from Plan B) in studio to preview the awards and find out who are the main contenders on the night.

Below are my predictions for the winners this Sunday...

Best motion picture, drama

“Hacksaw Ridge”

“Hell or High Water”

“Lion”

“Manchester by the Sea”

“Moonlight”

This is a really tough category to call, Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge has been widely praised by critics and Moonlight has been getting huge acclaim.  But I’m going to stick my neck out and go with Manchester by the Sea, which is meant to be a tour de force of emotions – let’s just say you’ll need the tissues when watching this as it has all the feels.

 Prediction: “Manchester by the Sea”

Best motion picture, musical or comedy

 “20th Century Women”

“Deadpool”

“La La Land”

“Florence Foster Jenkins”

“Sing Street”

Before I reveal who I think might win, this might be controversial but Sing Street (which is nominated) I’m not a fan of!!  I thought it was way over-hyped; the protagonist was in sufferable – I couldn’t connect with it.  Anyway, I’ve had a rub of the crystal ball and I think the winner will be La La Land.  Outside of being a throwback to the golden age of musicals it’s directed by Damien Chazelle – who is he?? I hear you cry – well, he’s the writer-director of Whiplash and is being touted for big things in the film industry.  With the acclaim La La Land has been receiving this could see him make the leap to one of Hollywood’s A-list directors.

 Prediction: “La La Land”

Best performance by an actress in a motion picture, drama

Amy Adams – “Arrival”

Jessica Chastain – “Miss Sloane”

Isabelle Huppert – “Elle”

Ruth Negga – “Loving”

Natalie Portman – “Jackie”

I’m going to nail my Irish colours to the mast and go with Ruth Negga; she gives an understated performance in Jeff Nichol’s Loving.  So much emotion is etched across her face.  Ruth gives a master-class in internal acting as opposed to the typical showy performance.  But the actress I think might give her a run for her money is Isabelle Huppert, who stars in Paul Verhoven’s rape-revenge drama Elle.

 Prediction: Ruth Negga – “Loving”

Best performance by an actor in a motion picture, drama

Casey Affleck – “Manchester by the Sea”

Joel Edgerton – “Loving”

Andrew Garfield – “Hacksaw Ridge”

Viggo Mortensen –  “Captain Fantastic”

Denzel Washington – “Fences”

This is another tough category to predict we have 5 outstanding performances that critics have salivating over.  You have the elder statesmen Denzel and Viggo showcasing all their skills, but I think it’ll be one of the young bucks that will swoop in and claim the prize. I reckon it could be between Andrew Garfield and Casey Affleck... I’m torn who to go with, but I think Affleck might pip Garfield to the post.

Prediction: Casey Affleck – “Manchester by the Sea”

Best performance by an actress in a motion picture, musical or comedy

Annette Bening – “20th Century Women”

Lily Collins – “Rules Don’t Apply”

Hailee Steinfeld – “The Edge of Seventeen”

Emma Stone – “La La Land”

Meryl Streep – “Florence Foster Jenkins”

I think this will be the year for Emma Stone.  Her performance has being getting plenty of attention, so  I’ll throw my hat into the Stone ring.

Prediction: Emma Stone – “La La Land”

Best performance by an actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy

Colin Farrell – “The Lobster”

Ryan Gosling – “La La Land”

Hugh Grant – “Florence Foster Jenkins”

Jonah Hill – “War Dogs”

Ryan Reynolds – “Deadpool”

I have all the bits crossed this will go to Colin Farrell.  He gives a brilliant performance in The Lobster.  You can clearly see he put on the pounds for the role and the weight of the world is evident on his shoulders from his quirky lovelorn performance.

Prediction: Colin Farrell – “The Lobster”

Best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a motion picture

Mahershala Ali – “Moonlight”

Jeff Bridges – “Hell or High Water”

Simon Helberg – “Florence Foster Jenkins”

Dev Patel – “Lion”

Aaron Taylor-Johnson – “Nocturnal Animals”

A performance which has gone under the radar but is meant to be incredible is that of Mahershala Ali in “Moonlight”.  I think he’s going to nab this one; although that walking mannequin Aaron Taylor-Johnson might be his main competition.  I’ve never been a fan of Taylor-Johnson but he proved he can actually act with his performance in Nocturnal Animals.

 Prediction: Mahershala Ali – “Moonlight”

Best performance by actress in a supporting role in a motion picture

Viola Davis – “Fences”

Naomie Harris – “Moonlight”

Nicole Kidman – “Lion”

Octavia Spencer – “Hidden Figures”

Michelle Williams – “Manchester by the Sea”

I’m going to throw my weight behind Viola Davis in Fences.  She knows the source material really well having acted in the play and she produces a powerhouse performance that at times leaves Denzel Washington in the shade.  How many actors can do that???

 Prediction: Viola Davis – “Fences”

Best director, motion picture

Damien Chazelle – “La La Land”

Tom Ford – “Nocturnal Animals”

Mel Gibson – “Hacksaw Ridge”

Barry Jenkins – “Moonlight”

Kenneth Lonergan – “Manchester by the Sea”

The Hollywood foreign press like awarding some nominees just to have them there at the ceremony, and my gut feeling is that they’ll give it to Mel Gibson to see just what he might say on the night.  Could this be the moment where he stands in front of his peers and atones for those incredulous actions???  You know you want to see that....

Prediction: Mel Gibson – “Hacksaw Ridge”

Best motion picture, animated

“Kubo and the Two Strings”

“Moana”

“My Life as a Zucchini”

“Sing”

“Zootopia”

My heart says Zootopia but I think it’ll go to Kubo and the Two Strings, an amazing stop-motion animated film from the studio Laika, which is known for producing such pain-staking animations.

Prediction: “Kubo and the Two Strings”
