UPDATE 7:50AM

Donald Trump has been elected as the 45th President of the United States. Hillary Clinton conceded defeat to the Republican a few moments ago.

He spoke to some of his supporters at an event in New York this morning, along with the Vice President Elect Mike Pence.

These fans were extremely upset leaving Clinton Rally this morning.

Donald Trump's edging closer to becoming the next US President - after taking key battleground states.

The Republican candidate has defied the bookies, by securing crucial victories over rival Hillary Clinton in Florida, Ohio and North Carolina.

But the results from a handful of other states are still not in, and neither candidate's received enough votes yet to win the White House.

It's been the most bitter, bizarre, and closely fought elections in modern history and despite the close polls, I guess we thought that Hillary would win out in the end and make history by becoming the first female US President.

But a bit like Brexit in the UK, which was the other shock result this year, too many Americas just don't like the way their country is being run, or don't think that they are better off since the last election.

Here's why we have to look at The Donald's face for the next 4 years:

  • He's not a politician, which ironically to some Americans, is seen as a good thing. He's an outsider - he's not part of the elite political world that Clinton inhabits. He won the protest vote.
  • He's a former reality TV star, (The Apprentice), and has been famous for a very long time which resulted in big name recognition for Trump.
  • Despite his racist comments, describing Mexicans as rapists, promising to build a wall, and calling for a ban on Muslims from entering the US, Trump is perceived as being a straight talker.
  • Trump tapped into a group of angry Americans who feel their opinions haven't been represented or heard in the past 8 years.
  • He played on people's fears and used scare tactics about ISIS, immigration and American jobs going overseas.
  • We underestimated how unpopular Hillary Clinton is in America. She is really not liked. Ordinary people think she doesn't connect with them or has anything in common with them.
  • Clinton's controversy about using a private e-mail server when she was Secretary of State, never went away and Americans don't trust her.
  • Hillary Clinton is a woman and let's face it, despite great progress for gender equality, we still live in a patriarchal society.
